BITEWISE

Privacy Policy

Last updated 28 October 2026

Bitewise ("the app", "we") is made by Bitewise AI. This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: your meal and workout logs stay on your iPhone. We send data off your device only when you use an AI feature, a challenge, or when you create an account.

What stays on your device

Your meals, meal photos, workouts, weight entries, goals, profile details and settings are stored on your iPhone. We cannot see this data unless you choose to share part of it (see Accounts and Challenges below). You can export it from Profile and erase it with "Erase all data". Deleting the app also removes it.

What is sent when you use AI features

When you take a meal photo, describe a meal, scan a label, or ask the coach, the app sends that input to our server, which passes it to Anthropic, an AI provider, to produce the result. For the coach this includes a summary of your recent logs (such as calories, macros, weight and workouts). The app asks for your permission before the first AI request. Nothing is sent unless you use an AI feature, and nothing is sent for advertising.

Our server does not store your photos, text or coach summaries. It keeps only a short-lived counter tied to your account or subscription identifier so we can enforce daily usage limits. Anthropic processes requests under its own terms and privacy policy; under its commercial API terms, inputs are not used to train its models.

Accounts

You create an account with your name, email address and a password. We store your name and email, and a one-way hash of your password (we never store the password itself), on our server so you can sign in and restore your plan on a new phone. You can delete your account, and the data tied to it, from Profile at any time. Bitewise does not send marketing email.

Challenges and referrals

If you join a challenge, the app sends your display name and your daily challenge stats to our server so other members of the same challenge can see the leaderboard. These stats are: steps, calories eaten and your calorie goal, protein, number of meals logged, training minutes, your health score, and the points they earn. Only people in that challenge can see them. You can leave a challenge or delete your challenge data from the Challenges menu.

If you allow notifications, we store a push token for your phone so we can tell you when someone in a challenge passes you, takes the lead or pokes you. The token is removed when you delete your challenge data or account, and you can turn notifications off in iOS Settings at any time.

If you use a friend's referral code, we store the link between the two accounts so rewards can be applied through Apple.

Usage counts and feedback

To keep the app running well, the app sends a few daily numbers linked to your account: how many meals and workouts you logged, total calories and protein, training minutes, water glasses, your streak, your plan, and your app and iOS version. These are counts only. The names, photos and notes of your meals never leave your phone. We use them to understand how the app is used and to fix problems, and not for advertising.

If you send feedback from Profile, we store your message with your name, email and app version so we can reply and improve the app. If you enter a creator code, we record which code you used so the creator's promotion can be counted.

Barcode lookups

When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org) to look up the product. Product data comes from Open Food Facts, a community database licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL).

Apple Health

If you connect Apple Health, the app reads steps, active energy, exercise minutes and workouts. The app never writes to Health. This data is used on your device to show your activity and is not sent to our server or to Anthropic. You can change access at any time in the Health app.

Subscriptions

Purchases are handled by Apple. To confirm your plan, the app sends Apple signed proof of your subscription to our server, which verifies it with Apple. We do not receive your payment details or Apple ID.

Camera, photos and notifications

The camera and photo library are used only to capture or choose meal photos. Notifications are optional meal reminders scheduled on your device.

Tracking and third parties

There are no ads, no analytics SDKs and no tracking across other companies apps or websites. The only third parties involved are Apple (purchases and Health), Anthropic (AI processing), Open Food Facts (barcode lookups) and Netlify, which hosts our server.

Children

Bitewise is not directed at children under 13.
